Research Scientist (m/f/d) - Electromagnetic Actuator Technologies (80-100%)
Are you interested in shaping the next generation of electromagnetic actuation systems in electrification and process automation - and in the identification and development of new linear and rotational drive concepts, technologies and platforms? Would you like to apply your expertise in a challenging & fascinating environment in a global and diverse company? Then, join our team of highly motivated researchers and students as a research scientist for electromagnetic actuator technologies, and contribute to the foundations of next-generation ABB products. In cross-functional teams you will cooperate with other researchers inside and outside the company and demonstrate novel actuation concepts in prototypes serving as starting points for subsequent product development. We expect that you show a high motivation, hands-on attitude as well as taking initiative to come up with new ideas that tackle today’s challenges.
Your responsibilities
- Conduct applied research in the area of mechanisms and actuators, in particular develop new actuation systems within the wide and versatile field of ABB’s products
- Apply advanced mathematical modeling and simulation to design and verify electromagnetic actuators and mechatronic systems
- Contribute to the planning, setup, and execution of experiments to test and validate demonstrators together with a prototyping team
- Lead R&D projects with cross-functional teams in close cooperation with ABB divisions, customers and universities
- Identity new trends through observation of market, competition, and university research
- Generate intellectual property
- Present research results within the ABB group and at scientific conferences/journals
Your background
- PhD degree in electrical engineering, mechatronics engineering, or related field is essential
- Fundamental understanding of electromagnetics in the context of electrical drives/motors/actuators is a prerequisite
- Demonstrable experience and knowledge in the field of computational electromagnetics, i.e. analytical understanding of related equation systems and advanced modeling skills in FEM software tools (e.g. Ansys /Maxwell, Comsol) is essential
- Strong practical laboratory skills are beneficial, i.e. experience in designing, commissioning, and running dedicated test setups followed by data processing analysis
- Research publications, conference contributions and services as well as experience in third-party funded project application would be considered a plus
- Knowledge of signal processing and micro-controller or FPGA based control technology and hardware-in-the-loop systems would be considered a plus
- High interest in exploring new fields of research and technology outside own field of expertise, paired with a collaborative, solution-oriented approach
- Fluency in English (written and spoken) is essential; German language skills are beneficial but not a prerequisite
