Would you like to get a glimpse behind the scenes of an international, future-focused company? Come and join us as a working student. In this way, you will gain valuable practical experience and perform a range of day-to-day tasks as a fully integrated member of the team while still a student. After that, we can offer some attractive prospects to get your career started.
Looking for a taste of working life in an international, future-focused corporate group? Then join us as an intern and familiarise yourself with a suitable department for 3 to 6 months. You will be involved in large-scale projects and perform a defined set of duties independently. Use your internship to build a network and become familiar with our company.
Your responsibilities
- Components for industrial automation systems, such as controllers, sensors, and actuators, are becoming increasingly interconnected. This connectivity facilitates data collection, data analysis, and automation, which enables improving productivity and efficiency of industrial facilities. A key technology to connect industrial components is the OPC UA communication protocol. OPC UA is a common standard that allows seamless data exchange and interoperability between devices from different manufacturers. However, interconnecting industrial machines also increases their risk of being the target of cyber attacks. To defend these against these attacks, existing and novel OPC UA security concepts need to be applied in connected industrial components.
- In close collaboration with our research team, you will design, implement, and evaluate OPC UA security concepts for embedded systems. In specific, you will focus on resource-constrained embedded devices that provide only very limited computing power and memory resources. On these resource-constrained devices you will implement novel OPC UA security solutions and evaluate them regarding runtime performance, memory footprint, and power consumption. Furthermore, your task is to build an OPC UA security demonstrator, which can be shown internally within ABB, but also to external business partners, e.g., at industry fairs and exhibitions.
Your background
- Study background in computer science, IT security, engineering or similar knowledge
- Experience with software development on embedded systems in C, C++, or Rust
- Knowledge of network protocols (ISO/OSI layers, IP, TCP) and industrial communication technologies (e.g., OPC UA) is appreciated
- Knowledge of applied cryptography, public-key infrastructures, network security, and embedded systems security is appreciated
- Highly motivated, team-minded, and able to work independently
- Fluent communication in German or English in verbal and written form
